FAQ

Question 1
Question: Is there a try out class to see the academy, dancers and teachers?
Answer: Yes! Please take our free try out class! You are invited to take a free trial class at any time.
Just give us a simple email and let us know when you are coming!
Every day of the week in the evening during ABS classes (http://abc-tokyo.com/abs/schedule.html) or Saturday morning is fine. We are looking forward to see you!
In the trial class you can meet teachers, meet fellow students and feel the relaxed atmosphere!
Of course we will be able to answer questions you have after class.
(Please know the Trial Class is free, but the Trial class is not the Audition).

Question 2
Question: Can I just come and watch the class?
Answer: Just watching might intimidate the other students.. .From our experience it is much better to take a class then to watch it – so you really have an experience! We are sure that you will like the free TRY OUT CLASS and enjoy the atmosphere.
Watching a class is sometimes very intimidating for the dancing students – as you can imagine yourself– so please simply try the free try out class and join us dancing!

Question 3
Question: Do students have to pay for performances?
Answer: We have many performances a year and we provide costumes and all for them. Only once a year there is a production in which students get tickets and pay some participant fee. BUT: full scholarship students go completely free even of those costs! And the partial scholarship students get a reduced fee (55.000 Yen for what they get 20 tickets a 3.000 Yen per ticket).
Rehearsals for these events are during the normal lessons - variation and rehearsal times – you don't have to skip school or anything else to be in them.
But you don't have to perform in all these events, if you don't want.
If you are too busy with school or have any other reason, simply let us know in which ones you want to be in, and in which ones not. Not a problem at all!

Question 4
Question: What happens after the graduation?
Answer: You have a big variety of auditions and we offer help for those to prepare!
It is our pleasure to help you audition in foreign countries!
If you want, we help you free of charge to find a company you like the repertory, help you to prepare a good curriculum, shoot photos for you, help with the travel route, etc. We help you in writing the application letters too (English, German and French).
You can audition in Japan for Japanese companies too. In this case we think that you don't need any special help...
But of course you can join ABC Company too and will be very busy with us!

Question 5
Question: Can I participate at competitions?
Answer: Yes, we are happy to prepare you for competitions like Lausanne, Paris, New York and in Japan!
Almost at any time one of the ABS students is preparing for some special event!
We help you for finding a good variation fitting your type and technique and prepare you in rehearsals.
Before you dance the variation at the competition we will give you chances to perform it in
performances of ABS, so that you have a couple of “trial-runs” before the “big one”.
Recently one of our students won a prize in a Japanese competition and accepted the invitation to continue her studies in Germany – which we completely supported.
If you don't like to do competition, then that is fine too. Some students don't like, some students like. It is absolutely up to you.

Question 6
Question: Can I continue contact with my old ballet school if I want?
Answer: We are very happy, if you continue with your old school and ballet master.
You can continue performances, can help with teaching, with performance preparation and everything
else!
In addition you are able to receive a free Ballet Teachers Course as student at ABS. That will allow you to become a ballet teacher with diploma to assist your former sensei even better!

Question 7
Question: I cannot make the official audition day. What can I do know?
Answer: It is no problem at all, if you cannot come to the official audition day (June 17 is the next one). Just give us an email and let us know when you can take a “personal audition”. Then you simply come to one of our classes and we talk later with you.
You can take the audition at any morning class from ABC/ABS or any evening class! We will adjust to your schedule and help you finding a stress free day, which fits your life.

Question 8
Question: What do you look at during the audition? What can make me a full scholarship student?
Answer: Most of all we look at your potential, of what you can become if you are trained excellent in a professional atmosphere. We look at were you can be in three years with us.
Honestly we are not so much interested in how high your legs are today and how many pirouettes you turn today.
We mostly look at your artistic potential as performer, actor, THEN your technique, stretch, and so on.
As we will help you to become a professional dancer we have different measurements than you think: your teacher might even think you are not so gifted, but we might see an undiscovered potential in you, which we will help you to develop with our teaching.
And you might receive a full or half scholarship, even if you would never have expected it.

Question 9
Question: Do you have a dormitory?
Answer: No, unfortunately we don't have a dorm. Many of our students stay with extended family in Tokyo and come to our studio which is on the JR Yamanote line.
We have access to 5 different trains and it is very convenient usually to come to us.
Some of our students rent a student apartment under supervision, or stay alone.
We will of course talk to you and your parents and talk through the best options for you.
Of course the ABS students who work with us and stay in similar situations can share with you and your parents their own experiences – that will help you too!
We provide a personal care for each student during the time with us during injuries, illnesses and other situations. We have several persons who take especially care of the younger students.

Question 10
Question: Which time can I join ABC and ABS during the year?
Answer: You can join ABS at any time during the year.
Even if you make an audition during the year you can start immediately.
Just note that scholarships are only given at the beginning of the next semester (We have 4 semesters a year). That means: you can for example audition on July 20 in a private audition and get a full scholarship.
So you can start from July 21 on with taking classes with everybody, but have to pay as regular student until August 16.
The full scholarship will be given from August 16, 2010 – which is the beginning of the summer semester.
