INTRODUCTION:
Dear Student!
If you are a Japanese living in Japan or a foreign student who comes with his parents to Tokyo, you have found a good place with us.
Several students, whose parents work with international companies for some years, but who want to continue their ballet studies in those years, are with us. As well as other students, whose parents happened to move to Tokyo.
Coming from the States, Europe or other countries, you will see that Chris and Rio - the directors - have been at home in those countries for some time.
We are very flexible to adjust our offer to your school & university schedule.
Regardless of the time of the year when you arrive in Tokyo, just come by anytime, and introduce yourself. You don't have to wait for the next official audition, a private audition can be done any time.

We want to give you now an overview about our program.

Our Ballet Academy offers Japan’s first free professional ballet education (3 year program).
It is available for students between 14 and 23 years.
(If you are not yet, but almost 14 years, please talk to us and we will consider your age/level and will consider possibilities).

After three years students graduate with a diploma. (If you stay for a shorter time in Japan, you still will receive each year a report with grades in all main courses of the curriculum.

We offer a level comparable to international professional academies.
Our director Rio Mitani received her professional education in Austria at the Opera Ballet School and at the Conservatory for Classical Ballet. Christian Martinu danced at the Vienna State Ballet.
Several times a year guest teachers from the US, Netherlands, Austria, etc. are giving workshops.

Entrance is done by an audition only; if you come to Tokyo between the official auditions, you can make a private audition any time!

The level of scholarship (full, partial or regular) is decided after the audition and will be given on the day of the audition to you.
You have then one week to let us know when you want to start.
If your parents have any questions, they are more then welcome to meet Christian and Rio and discuss the questions.

MISSION STATEMENT
Austrian Ballet School (ABS) will create and maintain a ballet academy of high international standards.

ABS will follow the European concept of State-owned ballet academies wherein students accepted will receive a tuition-free education.
We strongly believe that talent should be supported in every way, including financially, and within an environment that allows free and complete development of the artist, with excellent first class coaching from accomplished professionals.

WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
I grew up in Vienna from the age of one, and was blessed to receive professional ballet training at the Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera at no cost. Later, I earned a Diploma of Graduation from the Vienna Ballet Conservatory.
As a child, I didn't understand how rare and valuable it was to be raised as a dancer. I studied the basics and technique, observed professionals up close, and was judged by my performance; breathing in the professional world of ballet; and I was taught what ballet is.

After having worked in Japan, I see that I shouldn't have taken my training for granted, since there are no state-subsidized ballet academies in Japan, and Japan is filled with talented students. So I have decided to help support these students, to share my experience, and possibly to help some gifted young artists to spread their wings and fly!
